GENDER BASED VIOLENCE LAWYER
In Spain, Gender-based violence (or GBV) is violence directed against women by their partners or ex-partners, as long as the latter are men. GBV can take on many forms: threats, duress, assault or even homicide or murder in extreme cases.
The biggest hurdle battered women face when they are contemplating putting an end to their situation is the thought of reporting their abuser and the uncertainty surrounding the outcome of a trial, to which the usual fear of their partner is added.
This firm has been defending battered women for more than 35 years. We were already championing the cause when it was a largely ignored, but very pressing, problem in Spanish society. If we disagree with the current gender-based violence regulations, it is because, among other aspects, they do not solve the root of the predicament women find themselves in. Even today, thousands of battered women in Spain are afraid to speak out and report their abuser.
However, gender-based violence can be overcome, and it starts with reporting the crime. To do so, the victim must feel safe knowing that they have the support of a lawyer that specialises in these cases and has extensive experience on the matter. Like our lawyers here at Patón & Asociados.
