DOMESTIC ABUSE LAWYER

Domestic abuse refers to a pattern of abusive behaviour that occurs between two people who are in a relationship and which leads to the victim living in a constant state of fear.

Women are the ones who statistically experience domestic abuse, but there are also cases of men that are permanently afraid of their wife’s or girlfriend’s violent outbursts. Violence can be physical or psychological, which is why it is common to distinguish between physical domestic abuse and psychological domestic abuse.

Domestic abuse, as a pattern of behaviour, is a serious crime in Spain and it differs from occasional abuse as it carries a more severe sentence – it can lead to three years in jail.

WHAT TO DO IF…

People who are experiencing domestic abuse usually suffer greatly in silence. Many victims are ashamed to speak out about their situation, but often the reason behind the silence is that the abuser has isolated them from their environment – family and friends – so they can’t turn to anyone for protection.

Additionally, victims are usually scared to report their situation because they know they will have to confront their abuser, who is the person that has made them live in fear.

Fortunately, Spain offers many resources that support all victims so they can get out of the abusive situation they are experiencing, and to help them decide to take the important step that is reporting it.

EXAMPLES OF DOMESTIC ABUSE SITUATIONS

1

I know I should put an end to what my wife makes me and the children go through, but I don’t because I know if I file for divorce she is likely to get custody of our kids. For their sake, I would rather keep putting up with it.

2

My husband hit me for the first time a while ago. I always try to make sure that everything is in order so he won’t get mad, because when he does he yells at me and at the children. He slaps the children pretty hard, so when I know he is going to, I stand between him and the children and he ends up hitting me instead. I can’t get divorced, because if I do my children will be alone with him and I don’t know what he’s capable of.

3

I always leave work as soon as possible because if I take longer my wife gets worried. She’s very jealous and she always thinks I might be with another woman. I stopped spending time with my friends because she would always yell and even hit me, and I would rather not spend time with my family because she hates my mother and if I go see her, she won’t let me spend time with my children.
